Trails and tramps in Alaska and Newfoundland William S Thomas 9785518646667 Books Reviews
One of the first things that caught my attention was this
"After breakfast I donned my hunting outfit and strolled along the beach until I reached the mouth of a small creek which flowed into the bay. I was amazed at the number of humpback salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) ascending the stream to spawn, some green and fresh from the briny deep, others changed to a dark lead color by contact with the fresh water, and others, struggle worn, almost without scales or skin to cover their bodies. They were running upstream by the thousands."
Before I had read this, I was not aware of the color difference between salmon in fresh water vs. salt water.
A little later on
"Frequently I could see two males or two females fighting each other, striking with their tails and biting like dogs, trying to get possession of a hole in the sand in which the spawn might be deposited."
I have never seen the salmon coming in to spawn, but that is on my to-do list someday!
There are many small short side stories in this book as well. Such as his guide, Grant, who related an amazing story how he had to cut off a trapper's leg, because it had been caught in a bear trap; and many other short tales and local knowledge.
Another thing I found interesting was
"Roasted and served as only old "mammy" can roast and serve it, 'possum defies comparison. Perhaps roast suckling-pig comes the nearest, but even this lacks the flavor of the woods."
The chapters are fairly long, chapter 1 takes 23% of the book, but there are several stopping points if needed.
I don't agree with all of his conclusions, or some of the ways that he views nature or conservation.
Like many of the free, old books for this one shows its age but is still a decent tale. The author gives such detailed descriptions of his experiences that you really feel deeply involved in his trips. Folks who enjoy the great outdoors will enjoy this book but be warned that it's from a different time, when hunting and fishing were not as carefully controlled and thought out as today. I don't hunt for sport, I hunt for food, so some of the descriptions of "great kills" were unsettling, But that's the way life was, and that's one reason to read the book with an open mind. I would recommend the book to others.
